Serie A: Juventus slip a booby-trap clause into Di Gregorio’s Bournemouth loan

Bournemouth, not Marseille

Michele Di Gregorio is not going to OM. The Italian goalkeeper is expected on the south coast of England within hours. Bournemouth moved quicker than the Marseille club and struck their agreement with Juventus.

On paper the structure is plain enough. A free loan, with an option to buy at 15 million euros. Di Gregorio arrives to sit behind Djordje Petrovic.

One and a half million reasons to think twice

Juventus tucked a line into the paperwork that has people around the game reading it twice. If Bournemouth decline the option at the end of the season, they owe Turin 1.5 million euros anyway. Call it compensation. It behaves like a penalty.

Either way, Juventus win. Bournemouth complete the transfer for 15 million, or the Old Lady collects a cheque for taking back a keeper she had already decided she did not want.

Marseille were days into this, and lost it anyway

OM had been working the file for a while. They needed a goalkeeper, opened talks with Juventus, and thought they were making progress. Bournemouth simply got there first.

For Di Gregorio, the Premier League begins as a confirmed No 2. That detail will sit in the background of every conversation Bournemouth have about him next spring.
