NHL: Devils dismantle Vegas as the Hughes brothers combine

Two goals each for Hughes and Gritsyuk

New Jersey walked into Las Vegas on Friday night and left with a 5-2 win. Jack Hughes and Arseny Gritsyuk each scored twice, and Luke Hughes added the fifth goal, so both Hughes brothers finished the night on the scoresheet.

The Devils did not need to chase the game for long. Gritsyuk and the elder Hughes supplied most of the damage, and the defenseman Luke Hughes closed the scoring column for a team that finished well clear of a home side playing in front of its own crowd.

Vegas answers, briefly

The Golden Knights did hit back late in the first period. Mark Stone and Ivan Barbashev scored 90 seconds apart, which briefly gave the arena something to cheer about. Adin Hill finished with 27 saves, but the two goals were all the home side could muster against a Devils group that kept its structure once the game settled.

New Jersey’s scoring was spread across lines and positions, and that is the detail that stands out. Two forwards with two goals each, plus a goal from the blue line, is the kind of balance that makes a team hard to match up against on the road.
