La Liga: Dani Ceballos returns to Betis on a free

Nine years on, back where it all began

Dani Ceballos is a Real Betis player again. The Andalusian club confirmed the move late on Tuesday night, with the Spanish window hours from shutting. The 30-year-old midfielder has signed for three seasons.

He had been free since his Real Madrid deal expired, an odd position for a player of his standing, and he spent much of the summer weighing up offers. Betis never really let it go. They had tried to bring him back several times in recent years and kept coming up short.

A homegrown talent

Betis made a point of stressing that. Ceballos came through their youth ranks and played his first top-flight matches there in 2014. Three years later he left Seville for the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid was a mixed bag. Two loan spells at Arsenal between 2019 and 2021, the odd run in the side, and more often than not a luxury option from the bench. He never nailed down a permanent place in the midfield pecking order, even in stretches when he clearly changed games.

What Betis get out of it

A playmaker who works between the lines, on a long deal, for nothing. Financially it is a low-risk move. Symbolically it says plenty at a time when Betis are trying to make a European push stick.

The match fitness question hangs over it. Without a club since his Madrid contract ran out, Ceballos has had no full pre-season with a professional squad. It may take a few weeks before he is up to speed.

Betis have signed a player they know inside out. Now they have to give him the minutes Madrid no longer would.
