Rugby: Dallaglio’s 2003 World Cup medal sells for £54,000

Medal goes at the low end of the estimate

Lawrence Dallaglio’s 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal has sold for £54,000. Experts had predicted it could reach as much as £80,000, so the hammer price landed at the bottom of the expected range.

It was the headline lot among 13 pieces of England memorabilia sold from the former flanker’s collection. A red England cap fetched £8,000 and a 2003 Six Nations medal went for £7,500. His 2007 World Cup final runner-up medal sold for £5,000, while the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens final winner’s medal made just £1,100.

Nine lots failed to sell

Not everything found a buyer. Nine further lots did not meet their reserve and stay with Dallaglio for now. Even for a World Cup winner, the market was cautious.

The sale comes after a difficult stretch away from rugby. Dallaglio, 54, was declared insolvent in 2025 following a divorce. Reports say he sold the family home last May for £2.4 million, some £900,000 below its original asking price, and was declared bankrupt the following day. He was ordered to repay an overdrawn director’s loan of more than £366,500, and HM Revenue and Customs and two other creditors are reported to have claimed more than £400,000 between them.

Planet Rugby, which broke the story, put the medal’s price firmly below what collectors had hoped for. The total raised across the 13 lots has been reported with differing figures, so the exact sum remains unclear.
