NBA: Curry perfect from the field as Warriors rout Nuggets

Golden State finally gets on the board

Three straight losses, a rested core in Phoenix on Saturday and a growing pile of questions. Golden State answered all of it in Denver overnight, beating the Nuggets 134-114 for its first win of the season.

Stephen Curry went 8 of 8 from the floor, three of them from deep, and 5 of 5 at the line for 24 points. He took just one shot in the first half, then scored 17 in the third quarter as a 60-56 halftime lead became 80-65 and, by the end of the period, 100-84. Steve Kerr had sat Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Draymond Green and Al Horford at Phoenix, and all four played Monday.

Lendeborg is the real surprise

The biggest number belonged to rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who scored a career-high 31 with 12 rebounds. Podziemski had 18, Gui Santos 13 and Horford 11, while Georges Niang opened the second quarter with two threes.

Denver’s DeMar DeRozan led the Nuggets with 21. Nikola Jokic put up 19 points and 11 assists, Jamal Murray scored 19, and Aaron Gordon was ejected with 8:34 left after two technical fouls.

No miracle comeback this time

On Saturday the Nuggets rallied from 23 down to beat New Orleans in overtime. Trailing by 24 in the fourth quarter here, they never got inside 13, and a 9-0 Warriors burst shut the door. The open question for Golden State is whether Lendeborg’s night is a one-off or the start of a real role next to Curry.
