NBA: Curry’s eight threes bury Lakers in Golden State rally

A 25-point hole, gone by the fourth

Los Angeles led by 25 and still lost. The Warriors beat the Lakers 112-95 in San Francisco on Friday night, an NBA Cup opener for both clubs that flipped completely in the third quarter.

The first half was lopsided in turns, with each team winning one quarter 38-15. Luka Doncic poured in 21 points in the first quarter alone and finished with a game-high 37. Golden State still trailed 72-63 late in the third. Then came a 22-8 burst to close the period, 13 of those points from Brandon Williams, Charles Bassey and De’Anthony Melton off the bench. All told the Warriors outscored the Lakers 33-8 across that stretch.

They opened the fourth with an 11-0 run to go up 17. Los Angeles never got closer than 12 after that.

Curry sets the tone from deep

Stephen Curry finished with 31 points, six assists and eight three-pointers on 14 attempts, a season high from the arc. It came right after his 44-point night in Minnesota. Brandin Podziemski added 21 and kicked off the fourth-quarter run, Melton had 16 and George Niang 11. Draymond Green chipped in nine assists and three steals.

The bench produced 50 points. Golden State also won the three-point battle 66-33, which tells most of the story.

Lakers undone by their own mistakes

Los Angeles gave the ball away 22 times, eight of them by Austin Reaves, who still scored 21. Walker Kessler led everyone with 13 rebounds, but the Lakers’ reserves managed just seven points all night.

This was also payback. The Lakers had beaten Golden State 127-105 on Oct. 21. The Warriors have now won three straight after an 0-3 start.
