Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis heads for hip surgery and injured reserve

NFL: Cowboys lose Malik Davis to hip surgery

Carted off Friday, operated on today

Malik Davis went down at Cowboys practice on Friday and left the field on a cart. He is having surgery on his hip today and heading to injured reserve, ESPN reported a few hours ago.

Dallas open their season tomorrow night against the Giants in East Rutherford. They will do it without the running back who had spent the build-up as the primary backup to Javonte Williams.

Stephen Jones spoke to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas about it. “Unfortunately, I think he’s looking at a pretty serious injury that could take him out for some period of time,” the Cowboys executive vice president said. “We don’t have the final details; we’ll know more, but certainly so disappointed for Malik.”

Twenty-five games, ninety carries

Davis is 27 and has never carried a heavy load. Twenty-five games for Dallas have produced 90 carries, 411 yards and three touchdowns. That works out at 4.6 yards a carry, a respectable rate attached to a very small sample.

Last season accounted for 52 of those carries, 250 yards and two scores across 10 appearances. The rate holds up again, 4.8 per attempt, and the volume stays low again. He has functioned as a change-of-pace option and a depth piece, not a player the offence runs through.

Which is why the injury lands harder on Davis than on the Dallas game plan. Nobody was giving him 15 touches on Sunday night. They did want him standing there when Williams needed a series off.

Demercado steps in

Emari Demercado takes the job. Dallas claimed him off waivers and he now slots in behind Williams for the trip to New Jersey.

Williams carries the workload either way. The harder question arrives if he misses time at any point this autumn, because the room behind him just lost a body to an operating table.
