NFL: Cowboys land Broderick Jones in Steelers trade

A 2023 first-rounder heading for a new locker room

Broderick Jones is on the move from Pittsburgh to Dallas. The two teams struck a deal overnight involving three 2027 draft picks. According to ESPN, the Steelers are sending the offensive tackle and a fourth-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a third- and sixth-rounder from the same draft. The trade still hinges on a medical.

The context says plenty about the slide. Jones was taken in the first round of the 2023 draft by Pittsburgh, which had traded up to get him. He has made 38 career starts, on both the left and right sides. This preseason, he was working with the backups.

Pittsburgh had already moved on

The Pennsylvania franchise spent an April pick on Max Iheanachor, selected 21st overall to handle right tackle. The rookie is battling Dylan Cook for the job while Troy Fautanu, a first-round pick in 2024, settles in on the left side. Three first-rounders for two spots. The math was never going to work for long.

The irony won’t be lost on anyone. Mike McCarthy, starting his first season as Steelers head coach, spent five years in charge of the Cowboys. He knows better than most just how much Dallas loves offensive linemen, and he has just fed that habit.

Four first-round picks around one center

Terence Steele started at right tackle for Dallas last season. Tyler Guyton, a first-round pick in 2024, impressed the staff during preseason. If Jones ends up taking the right side, the Cowboys could line up four former first-round picks around center Cooper Beebe.

One question still hangs over the deal. Jones never really found his footing across three seasons in Pittsburgh, bouncing between both sides without ever locking down a role. Dallas is betting the issue was the setting, not the player. Final cuts on Sunday should tell us quickly who was right.
