Atlanta switches quarterbacks 48 hours before kickoff
Four quarterbacks on a 53-man roster looked like hoarding in August. On Friday it looked like foresight. Cooper Rush will start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Atlanta Falcons confirmed, with Tua Tagovailoa ruled out.
Monday, the franchise had Tagovailoa penciled in as QB1 for the opener. Thursday, that fell apart. He hurt his right oblique in practice and landed on the injury report within hours. ESPN confirmed he will not play.
It happened on camera. Video from 11Alive News in Atlanta catches Tagovailoa releasing a throw, then dropping to the turf with his right hand groping toward his back. He was back on his feet quickly enough.

Nine seasons in, 16 career starts
Rush is entering his ninth year in the league. Forty-two appearances, 16 starts, and a record that splits cleanly down the middle: nine wins and five losses across eight seasons in Dallas from 2017 to 2024, then 0-2 in Baltimore last year.
The 32-year-old walks into an offence already missing its top two options. Michael Penix Jr., who started in 2025, is still rehabbing a torn ACL in his left knee from last autumn. Not close to ready.
Tagovailoa signed in Atlanta over the summer after Miami released him. His first snap in red and black will have to wait.
The undrafted rookie now one snap away
Behind Rush sits Jack Strand, 22, undrafted, who arrived this summer out of Division II Minnesota State Moorhead. The NCAA has him 10th in DII history for passing yards at 13,161 and tied for fifth in touchdowns with 126. Numbers like that carry weight in Mankato. Sunday afternoon in Atlanta is a different test entirely, and Strand is the man who takes it if anything goes wrong in front of him.
