Cooks signs. Again.
Season No. 13. Team No. 7. Brandin Cooks is heading to the 49ers’ practice squad, ESPN reports. He had been out of work since splitting last season between New Orleans and Buffalo, and now gets another lifeline in the league.
San Francisco needs the depth badly. Injuries keep piling up at receiver. Ricky Pearsall is done for the year after surgery on his right knee, and De’Zhaun Stribling has been sidelined since Week 1.

A receiving room stripped bare
Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson both went down in the Week 2 win over Miami. Evans’ hip will be “managed” through the week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said. Robinson’s ankle sprain could keep him out three to six weeks. Cooks, for his part, still has to shake off the rust before he sees the field, which is why the practice squad comes first.
A well-traveled veteran
Cooks is 32 now. New Orleans took him in the first round back in 2014. Since then he’s worn the colors of the Patriots, Rams, Texans and Cowboys, before circling back through New Orleans and Buffalo. Seven teams in 12 years.
The numbers still stand out: 734 career catches, 9,811 yards, 60 touchdowns. Last season brought a quieter chapter, just 24 catches for 279 yards across 15 games. His last playoff appearance carried its own controversy too, a ball ripped loose by Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian that officials still ruled an interception.
