Commanders left tackle Laremy Tunsil undergoes triceps surgery

NFL: Commanders lose Laremy Tunsil to triceps surgery

Surgery, then a timeline

Laremy Tunsil will undergo surgery to repair a torn triceps, and the Washington Commanders expect a clearer recovery window once the procedure is done. Coach Dan Quinn delivered the news Monday. Typical recovery for the injury runs four to seven months, which keeps the door open for a late-season return.

“It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, especially a great player like LT,” Quinn said. “Not only is he an unbelievable player, but he is an absolutely fantastic teammate. He’ll be missed, and we certainly can’t wait to get him back.”

How it happened

Multiple outlets reported Tunsil got hurt Saturday during a one-on-one rep against Commanders edge rusher Odafe Oweh. He walked to the medical tent with trainers, then headed to the team’s training complex. Washington will slot Brandon Coleman in at left tackle and does not plan to add outside help. Coleman, 25, has started 17 of the 28 games he has played since arriving as a third-round pick in 2024. “He has played a lot of winning football at left tackle here, and we know he’s ready for it,” Quinn said.

What Washington is missing

Tunsil anchors this line. The five-time Pro Bowler signed a two-year extension in March with $61.5 million guaranteed, and his $30 million average made him the first offensive lineman to reach that mark. Washington acquired him from Houston in March 2025, and he started all 14 games he appeared in last season. The Dolphins drafted him 13th overall in 2016, but he grew into an elite tackle in Houston, earning Pro Bowl nods in every season there except 2021, when thumb surgery ended his year after five games. Losing him for months reshapes the protection in front of the quarterback.
