Clemson suspends Vic Burley after arrest

Swinney acts within hours

Clemson lost a starting-caliber defensive tackle before the season even opened. Dabo Swinney announced in a statement that senior Vic Burley has been suspended from the team indefinitely following an arrest early Saturday morning.

Swinney said Burley was charged with disorderly conduct after being arrested by the Clemson University Police Department.

“I have made the decision to suspend Vic from our football team indefinitely,” Swinney said. “We are extremely disappointed by his actions and decisions.”

No timeline came with the statement. Indefinite means what it says, and the coach set no marker for a return.

A five-star who was ready to start producing

Burley arrived in Clemson as a five-star recruit out of Warner Robins, Georgia. He stands 6-foot-4 and carries 315 pounds, and he has appeared in 21 games across his career, logging 267 defensive snaps.

Those snap totals matter more than the tackle count. Burley recorded 15 tackles last season while rotating, and the staff had earmarked him for a much larger workload up front this year. Interior linemen at his size are not replaced from the bench without cost.

LSU waits on Sept. 5

The timing sharpens everything. Clemson opens at No. 11 LSU on Sept. 5, on the road, unranked, against a defense-testing offense. Preparing for that trip without a senior interior lineman changes the rotation the coaching staff spent camp building.

Clemson enters the season outside the rankings, which is unfamiliar territory for a program that spent most of the past decade inside the top 10. The opener was already the hardest possible starting point. It just got harder up the middle.
