Chicago Fire celebrate a 3-1 comeback win over Santos Laguna in the Leagues Cup

Football: Lewandowski caps Chicago comeback vs Santos

Chicago wake up after the break

For an hour, Chicago Fire looked stuck. Then the game turned in a rush. Three second-half goals flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 win over Santos Laguna at SeatGeek Stadium on Sunday, and the Fire stayed perfect in the 2026 Leagues Cup.

Santos had led since the 20th minute, when Ezequiel Bullaude finished off a sharp move and put the visitors in front. Chicago struggled to respond before the interval. Whatever was said at halftime worked, because the team that came out for the second half barely resembled the one that went in.

Lod and Lewandowski finish the job

Philip Zinckernagel levelled it in the 72nd minute and shifted the momentum for good. The winner arrived in the 90th, Robin Lod steering the ball home from the centre of the box after Anton Salétros picked him out. Three minutes into stoppage time, Robert Lewandowski added the third and turned a nervy night into a comfortable scoreline.

That goal meant something for the striker. It was his first in the Leagues Cup and his third in three appearances since joining Chicago, following the two he scored against Charlotte before the tournament opened. At this stage of his career, Lewandowski is still finding the net at a rhythm most forwards would envy.

Perfect record, real momentum

Two games, two wins, and a comeback to prove the character is there. Chicago now control their own path in the group, and they did it the hard way, against a Liga MX side that had them chasing for an hour. Coming from behind tends to tell you more about a team than a routine victory ever could.

Santos Laguna will feel they let this one slip. They defended their lead well until the final third of the match, then folded inside 20 minutes. Chicago made them pay for every second-half lapse, and Lewandowski put the exclamation on it.
