A rehab setback ends the hopeful timeline
The Chargers did not need more bad news. They got it anyway. Los Angeles placed safety Derwin James on injured reserve on Saturday night, and the team says he will miss at least the next four games.
James hurt his hamstring after the September 27 game at Buffalo, which was only his third appearance of the season. He was first ruled out for three weeks. Then the rehab went sideways. A setback while the Chargers prepared for the trip to SoFi Stadium to face the Rams pushed him onto the list for good.

What it means for a 0-6 team
The earliest he can come back is Sunday, November 29, against the New England Patriots. By then the Chargers will have played through the worst stretch of their season without their All-Pro safety.
The team moved fast on the depth chart. It signed cornerback Isas Waxter to the active roster and elevated cornerback Kaiir Elam from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. Both are corner-first answers to a hole at safety, which tells you how thin the room has become.
James is 30, a five-time All-Pro, and he signed a three-year, $75.6 million extension in May. Durability was part of the pitch: he played 16 of 17 games in each of the past three seasons. This year he has appeared in three games, and the Chargers sit at 0-6 after their Week 7 bye.
