Two goals, and the one that mattered
Cole Caufield scored at 3:19 of overtime in the early hours of Tuesday. The Montreal Canadiens beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 at Colisee Videotron in Trois-Rivieres in the Kraft Hockeyville game. It was his second goal of the night.
He had tied it at 2-2 at 11:59 of the third period, finishing a give-and-go with Lane Hutson on the power play. Jayden Struble scored Montreal’s other goal. Samuel Montembeault, with seven saves, and Jakub Dobes, with eleven, shared the net.

A habit is forming
Two nights earlier, Caufield had already settled things in overtime against the Maple Leafs, scoring with 38 seconds left in a 4-3 win at the Bell Centre in an intra-squad game. Two outings, two decisive goals beyond regulation. The American winger has hit this training camp at full speed.
Across the ice, it was Ottawa’s first preseason outing. And their first since captain Brady Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers on June 22. A roster rebuilding around a fresh batch of summer faces.
Ottawa’s new faces
William Eklund opened the scoring after 1:29, set up by Dylan Cozens. The 23-year-old winger was acquired from the San Jose Sharks on June 23. Cozens added a goal and an assist, including the 2-1 marker at 19:47 of the second period.
Samuel Ersson turned away 34 shots. The goalie arrived in Ottawa on June 26, ten days after being acquired by Toronto from Philadelphia. Three summer moves, a reshaped roster, and a netminder who held the fort for a long stretch before finally breaking in overtime.
