Premier League: Carrick admits United have lost their way

Five minutes without a question

Michael Carrick opened his Friday press conference ahead of Manchester United’s game against Bournemouth by talking for 5 minutes and 27 seconds without interruption. The 45-year-old accepted that results have slipped. United have gone seven matches without a win, and after Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League they have won only four of their 11 games this season.

Carrick said the Como night hurt him and called the way his team played unacceptable, repeating what he told reporters after the final whistle, according to RMC Sport. He took the responsibility on himself: it is his job to put a team on the pitch that fans can be proud of, and in some games United have drifted away from that.

Back to basics, with a warning on entitlement

He contrasted the current run with the five months that preceded it, when United won 12 of 17 matches under him last season. That stretch, he said, brought a connection, intensity and enjoyment the team now has to find again.

The message to the squad was about humility, resilience and hard work, and about respect for what the club demands. Past success, he argued, gives nobody the right to win, and Manchester United remain bigger than any one individual. Carrick admitted the team has lost its way a little but said he is fully convinced it will find it again. His job looks increasingly fragile all the same. United face Bournemouth on Sunday at 3pm UK time.
