One goal, two assists, one very long afternoon for the Crew
Thirteen shots to two by half-time. That was the shape of Sunday’s game in Columbus long before the scoreline caught up, and Carles Gil was behind most of it as the New England Revolution won 3-1 on the road.
The Crew actually started well. Mo Farsi found Brais Mendez inside the box in the 8th minute, and his effort clipped a defender on its way past Matt Turner at the near post.
New England needed 24 minutes to answer. Gil swung in a corner, Mamadou Fofana nodded it back across the six-yard box, and Matt Polster stabbed it home in the 32nd. Ten minutes later Dor Turgeman was through on Gil’s pass, lifting his finish into the far corner to turn the game around before the break.
Gil finished the job himself in the 79th, a lob from 16 metres.

Patrick Schulte kept the score respectable
Eight saves. That is what Columbus’s goalkeeper produced, and the margin would have been embarrassing without him.
Turgeman thought he had his second in the 74th minute before VAR flagged him offside. Five minutes on, Gil made the point moot.
Jack Harrison, meanwhile, collected his sixth assist in five appearances since arriving from Leeds United on 25 July.
Bottom of the East, and no obvious way out
Columbus stay last in the Eastern Conference on 20 points from 5 wins, 12 defeats and 5 draws. Four straight MLS losses now, five across all competitions. A win would have pulled them within two points of the play-off line.
Where the goals come from is anyone’s guess. Since Daniel Gazdag’s contract was bought out on Friday, not a single active player in the squad has more than one goal, which makes Mendez the club’s top scorer with two in five league games.
The fixture itself was pushed from Saturday to Sunday because Columbus had flown to Carson, California, on Wednesday for a Leagues Cup quarter-final, where Club America beat them 2-0.
New England climb to 37 points from 11 wins, 7 defeats and 4 draws, fourth in the East, unbeaten in three.
