Everton brush Newcastle aside without Grealish
Everton did not need Jack Grealish. The club confirmed before kick-off that he had been dropped for a disciplinary breach, with reports pointing to a missed training session earlier in the week, and David Moyes called it a club matter. Then his team went out and won the fourth-round tie 3-1 against Newcastle on Thursday night.
James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute after Newcastle gave the ball away near the corner flag and Hayden Hackney picked him out. Hackney added his own just before the break, finishing Thierno Barry’s cross for his first goal in an Everton shirt.

Barry seals it, Burn gets one back
Barry made it three in the 69th minute on a counter that Dewsbury-Hall started. Dan Burn headed in a late consolation for Newcastle, and the final minutes turned scrappy. Burn, Joelinton and Tarkowski all went into the book after some pushing and shoving.
Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle called the result the “story of the season so far” and said his side needed to be more clinical. Moyes pointed to the values inside his squad as the reason it held together on a night when its biggest name was missing.
Fleetwood next, Newcastle again on Monday
Everton now meet Fleetwood Town in the quarter-finals in December. Fleetwood knocked Arsenal out of the same competition recently, so nobody at Hill Dickinson Stadium will treat it as a free pass. A win would give Everton their first League Cup semi-final since 2016.
The two clubs do not have long to wait for a rematch. Newcastle host Everton in the Premier League on Monday 2 November at 8pm.
