Montreal answers a 48-second deficit
Toronto had won its last ten home openers. The Montreal Canadiens ended that run overnight, winning 3-2 in Toronto on opening night and snapping the Maple Leafs’ 10-game home-opening winning streak.
William Nylander had the Leafs in front at 0:48 of the first period, finishing a shot from the right circle off passes from Kirill Marchenko and Morgan Rielly. It was the only lead Toronto held. Josh Anderson tied it at 10:53 by batting in an Alexandre Carrier shot from the slot, and Zachary Bolduc put Montreal ahead 2-1 at 4:52 of the second with an 18-foot wrist shot set up by Mike Matheson’s drive down the left boards.

Carrier’s late goal is the difference
Carrier stretched the lead to 3-1 at 13:12 of the third, scoring unassisted from the right point. Nylander pulled Toronto back within one at 15:46, completing a give-and-go with Easton Cowan for his second of the night, but the Leafs could not find an equalizer.
Anderson and Carrier each finished with a goal and an assist. Jakub Dobes made 26 saves for Montreal despite giving up that early goal, while Sergei Bobrovsky, acquired in the offseason, stopped 21 shots for the Maple Leafs.
What it means for both rooms
A ten-game opening-night streak is the kind of number a home crowd comes to expect, and Toronto spent most of the night chasing. Montreal, with Martin St. Louis signed on the bench through 2029-30, starts its season with a road win and a goalie who shook off the first shift.
