MLB: Cal Raleigh’s three homers sink the Phillies

A first at T-Mobile Park

T-Mobile Park opened in July 1999. Until Monday night no Seattle Mariners hitter had put three home runs on the board there in a single game. Cal Raleigh ended that wait in a 9-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The last Seattle player to hit three in a home ballpark was Edgar Martinez, on 18 May 1999 at the Kingdome, a few weeks before the club moved across the street.

The first came inside a five-run opening inning. Randy Arozarena walked, Dominic Canzone singled to right, and Julio Rodriguez cleared the back wall of the Phillies bullpen in left with a three-run drive. Taylor Ward walked, and Raleigh followed with a two-run shot to right off Zack Wheeler.

Wheeler’s night falls apart

Philadelphia had scored first. Kyle Schwarber walked to open the game, Bryce Harper and Luis Arraez singled, and Alec Bohm’s groundout brought Schwarber home. J.T. Realmuto answered Seattle’s burst with a liner over the wall in the second to make it 5-2. That was the last decent news the Phillies received all evening.

Seattle added another in the third. Rodriguez and Josh Naylor singled, Ward walked to load the bases, and Rodriguez raced home on a wild pitch. Raleigh and Cole Young then went back to back leading off the fifth, both to right field, and Wheeler’s outing ended there. The right-hander conceded eight runs on nine hits with five walks in four-plus innings and has now dropped four straight decisions.

Raleigh’s third arrived with one out in the seventh, a solo shot to right off reliever Chase Shugart.

What Seattle got out of it

Logan Gilbert worked five innings for the win, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Seranthony Dominguez, Gabe Speier and Carlos Vargas then combined for four perfect innings behind him, the sort of bullpen sequence a contender files away for October.

Philadelphia arrived in Seattle on a nine-game winning streak. They leave with it gone and with their ace short of answers.
