Ligue 1: Brest sign goalkeeper Mathieu Patouillet

Three years for a 22-year-old keeper

Stade Brestois announced Mathieu Patouillet on Wednesday morning. The 22-year-old goalkeeper, a product of the Olympique Lyonnais academy, has signed a three-year deal in Finistere.

Given where Brest are, this is not a squad-filler signing. It closes off a run of departures that emptied the position in a matter of weeks.

Patouillet spent last season at Al-Hilal and barely played, two appearances in the Asian Champions League across the entire campaign. A detour rather than a step forward, in a career that had been building nicely until then.

Three keepers out in one summer

SB29 have lost the lot. Gregoire Coudert to Burnley, Noah Jaudy to Francs Borains, Radoslaw Majecki back to Monaco with his loan expired. Not one of the three stayed.

Egil Selvik took the gloves for the Ligue 1 opener. The Norwegian may hold on to them. Nothing is settled.

Brest had already recruited Romain Cagnon and the young Noe Poillion this summer. Patouillet completes a goalkeeping department rebuilt from nothing.

Two seasons in National 1 is the real CV line

Before Saudi Arabia, the Lyon-born keeper spent two consecutive loan seasons at Sochaux in National 1. That is where the substance is: two full campaigns as a first-choice in an unforgiving division, at an age when plenty of keepers are still waiting for a debut.

He goes straight into a fight with Selvik for the shirt. That contest gets settled on the training ground over the coming weeks, and how it ends will shape the spine of Brest’s defence this season.
