Ligue 1: Brest land teenage striker Djylian N’Guessan on loan

The cover option Brest wanted

It is official as of Thursday lunchtime. Stade Brestois have secured the loan of Djylian N’Guessan, the 18-year-old striker developed at AS Saint-Etienne.

The Breton club announced the deal itself. “Stade Brestois 29 are delighted to announce the arrival of striker Djylian N’Guessan, on loan from AS Saint-Etienne,” the statement said. SB29 describe him as a “strong, mobile and skilful” player, able to operate through the middle or out wide.

Born in Saint-Nazaire, N’Guessan came through the ranks in the Forez. He leaves a Ligue 2 club for a first taste of the top flight.

A transfer window built on a tight budget

N’Guessan’s arrival rounds off a summer run on a shoestring in Brest. The club have only spent money on one deal.

Giovani Versini arrived from Pau for 2 M€. The rest came without a fee: Gautier Lloris, Joseph Nonge and Mathieu Patouillet signed on free transfers, while Noah Edjouma and Egil Selvik came in on loan.

Six signings, two million spent. A clear policy for a club that has to work with resources nowhere near the division’s heavy hitters.

A bet on potential

The profile fits Brest’s plan. Take a young player, give him minutes, and back his development rather than his reputation.

For N’Guessan, Ligue 1 has come early. He will have to fight for a place in an attacking unit where nothing is handed to an 18-year-old. The trip to Le Havre on Saturday might give him his first real look at what is coming.
