Forty-six million on the table
Brentford confirmed the signing of El Hadji Malick Diouf on Friday afternoon. The Senegalese left-back arrives from West Ham. The Bees have paid 46 million euros including add-ons to get it done.
The 21-year-old has agreed a five-year contract, with an option for a sixth. The club’s statement made no mention of the fee, which stays officially undisclosed.
West Ham are cashing in. Relegated to the Championship at the end of last season, they have to sell to balance the books. Diouf was one of the few assets in the squad with real market value.

Five assists in a side that went down
Thirty-two Premier League appearances last season. Diouf’s individual record stood in flat contrast to his team’s collapse, and he kept racking up starts while everything around him fell apart.
Those numbers explain the price. A 21-year-old left-back producing going forward in the Premier League is hard to find. Brentford preferred to pay now rather than get dragged into a bidding war next summer.
He already has 23 caps for the Lions of Teranga. At his age, that is a hefty total, built on breaking into the international side early.
What the Bees actually get
The left flank turns into a strength. Diouf brings pace and the legs to keep making runs late into games, both of which suit the direct football Brentford like to play.
Timing counts too. The market shuts in a few days and Brentford have wrapped up their business before the scramble. Whether they stop here, or whether this signals another move, is the open question.
