Brennan lights up the Burgos opener
Matthew Brennan confirmed his standing among the sport’s brightest young talents on Tuesday, winning the opening stage of the Vuelta a Burgos with a sharp uphill sprint to the Alto del Castillo above the city.
The Visma-Lease a Bike rider timed his effort on the ramp to the medieval castle to perfection, holding off the fast men who had survived the final drag. Teammate Ben Tulett came home second, completing a one-two for a squad that controlled the closing kilometres from front to back.

Visma set the tone before the Vuelta
Burgos has long served as the final rehearsal before the Vuelta a Espana, and Visma treated it that way. The Dutch team massed at the front on the run-in, thinned the group on the rise and delivered Brennan into the perfect position for the punch to the line.
Brennan takes the first leader’s jersey of the race. For a rider still early in his career, another victory at this level adds to a season that keeps building his reputation as a finisher who can climb.
Eyes on the summit finishes
The opening day rewarded a fast finish, but Burgos usually turns on its mountain stages later in the week. Brennan holds the lead for now. Keeping it will be another question entirely.
