Atlanta avoids the sweep in New York
Atlanta held firm. Late Sunday into Monday, the Braves edged the Yankees 2-1 in 10 innings to wrap up Sunday Night Baseball. The result saves them from being swept in the Bronx.
Michael Harris II delivered the knockout blow. Leading off the 10th, the outfielder poked a single to right on a 2-2 pitch. Automatic runner Ha-Seong Kim came home without a throw. 2-1. Game over.
It had been a tight one for seven innings. Matt Olson finally cracked it open by launching a 100 mph fastball from Cam Schlittler over the fence. The first baseman’s homer gave the Braves the lead in the seventh.

The pitching duel lived up to the billing
For New York, Schlittler was outstanding. Seven innings, one run, three hits, 11 strikeouts and no walks. He even touched 100 mph or more on nine pitches. It was the third time in his career he has struck out at least 10. A waste, really, with his lineup giving him next to nothing.
At the other end, Atlanta’s starter answered with six scoreless innings and just three hits allowed. Trent Grisham did pull the Yankees level with a homer in the eighth off Didier Fuentes, but the Braves took back control almost immediately against Paul Blackburn. Raisel Iglesias shut the door in the ninth with two strikeouts. Tyler Kinley worked a perfect 10th to pick up his first save of the season.
A firm hold on first place
The win matters in the standings. Atlanta moves to 70 wins and 47 losses and stays eight and a half games clear of Philadelphia in the National League East. The Braves remain in control of a race they’ve led since spring. The Yankees, meanwhile, are left to rue a solid outing on the mound that wasn’t backed up at the plate.
