NFL: Brady heads home to Foxboro, this time with a headset

A first return to Gillette in a broadcast booth

Tom Brady is going back to New England, and he won’t be carrying a ball. The seven-time Super Bowl champion will work Sunday’s Patriots-Packers game at Gillette Stadium as Fox Sports’ colour commentator, his first time at Foxboro as a broadcaster since he retired.

He told Colin Cowherd’s show he is looking forward to it. “I get to be there to watch it in person in front of a very friendly home crowd, I’m very excited,” Brady said. He also expects a few feelings to get in the way. “It’ll certainly be emotional,” he added, pointing to every part of the building, from the locker rooms to the media rooms to the field.

Brady was the 199th pick in the 2000 draft and spent 20 years in New England. He played in nine Super Bowls, winning six with the Patriots, and finished his time there with three MVP awards, 74,571 passing yards and 541 touchdowns before leaving in 2019. A seventh ring followed in his first season with Tampa Bay.

What he plans to say about the Patriots

Brady says the job is about the organisation, not about him. “I’m not talking about myself, I’m really talking about this awesome program that’s been built,” he said. The Patriots, in his words, “always seem to do things the right way.”

The game gives him plenty to talk about. New England is 5-3 and second in the AFC East, still chasing a place in the Super Bowl picture after losing the title game to Seattle in February. Green Bay arrives with its own history: since the Packers beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI, no franchise has a better regular-season record than New England’s 327-166 over 30 years. Green Bay is next at 310-180-3.

Each club has made the playoffs 22 times in that stretch. The Patriots won all six of their Super Bowls in it, while the Packers took two championships. Kickoff is at 9.25pm UK time.
