NBA: Booker drops 43 as Suns sink winless Warriors

Booker answers the Portland humbling

Phoenix needed a response, and Devin Booker supplied it. Four days after the Suns were flattened 124-83 in Portland to open the season, he scored 43 points overnight on 17-of-25 shooting, adding seven rebounds and seven assists in a 131-122 win over Golden State.

It was the Suns’ home opener, and they have now won their first game in front of their own crowd five years running. For a while, nothing suggested it. Phoenix made one three-pointer on twelve tries in the first quarter and led by only three at the break, 57-54, with Booker holding 19.

The third quarter decided it

Booker piled up 17 points in the third alone. Jordan Goodwin banged in a three at the buzzer to make it 102-92 heading into the fourth, and the Warriors never got back into it.

Luke Kennard, signed in the summer for exactly this kind of shot, hit a three that pushed the lead to 117-102 with six minutes left. He finished with 11 points and three triples. Miles Bridges added 16, and Dillon Brooks chipped in 15 points and five assists.

Golden State’s rough opening week

The Warriors played their third game in four nights and rested Stephen Curry (right knee), Brandin Podziemski, Draymond Green and Al Horford, the last three with back issues. At 0-3, they have their worst start in 19 years.

Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg gave them something, scoring a season-best 26 with six threes. De’Anthony Melton hit 8 of 13 for 25. Golden State visits Denver on Monday, while Phoenix heads to Oklahoma City.
