NHL hockey game action during a Blues versus Stars season opener

NHL: Blues Blank Stars 4-0 as McTavish Scores in 94 Seconds

McTavish needs 94 seconds

Mason McTavish did not wait around for his Blues debut. The 21-year-old centre, acquired from Anaheim for two first-round picks, scored 94 seconds into the season opener in Dallas overnight. It was the fifth-fastest opening goal to start a season opener in franchise history.

St. Louis never looked back. The Blues beat the Stars 4-0 at American Airlines Center on Friday night, and Dallas was chasing the game from the first shift.

Dalibor Dvorsky doubled the lead in the second period, and the goal came with some luck. Stars goalie Jake Oettinger went down after teammate Roope Hintz clipped him, leaving the net open. Jimmy Snuggerud and Pius Suter then added empty-net goals in the final two and a half minutes.

Hofer stands tall, Dallas stumbles

Joel Hofer stopped all 25 shots he faced for the ninth shutout of his career. Oettinger made 20 saves on 22 shots at the other end, and was not the main problem for Dallas.

The numbers for the Stars are ugly. It is their first season-opening loss since 2019, and it ends a six-game winning streak in openers. They were also shut out at home for the first time since the franchise moved to Dallas before the 1993-94 season.

Hintz briefly became a worry as well. He hurt his knee late in the game after a kneeling penalty, though he returned to the ice.

What comes next

St. Louis heads to Colorado for its next game, a much tougher test than a Dallas team still finding its footing. The Stars travel to Nashville.
