NFL football on the field, Bills safety suspension news

NFL: Bills’ Franklin escapes suspension with a fine

Appeal succeeds for Franklin

Sam Franklin Jr. will play against Baltimore. The NFL cut his one-game suspension down to a fine of $14,926 for unsportsmanlike conduct after hearing his appeal on Friday.

The league had accused the Bills safety of spitting at an opposing player during the game against the Las Vegas Raiders, after a Raiders extra point with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter. Franklin denies it.

Back for Week 8

Buffalo returns from its bye to face the Ravens on Nov. 1, and Franklin is eligible for that game. The reduced penalty keeps him available for the first game after the break.

Gardner-Johnson’s case went the other way

Teammate C.J. Gardner-Johnson did not get the same result. His suspension for spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers was upheld on appeal, and he can return Nov. 2.

So the league landed in two different places for two Bills players: a fine for Franklin, a full ban for Gardner-Johnson.
