A blast on the second pitch of the game
Cesar Perdomo barely had time to get settled. On his second pitch of the night, Mookie Betts launched the ball over the left-center fence. The Dodgers were already in front, and they never trailed again after the sixth inning. Los Angeles beat the San Francisco Giants 8-2 on Friday night.
That leadoff homer was the 53rd of Betts’ career. It means something. It ties the outfielder with Hall of Fame member Craig Biggio for fourth on the all-time list in that very specific category. Alfonso Soriano, in third, is now just one clear. At the top, Rickey Henderson still stands alone on 81, with George Springer next on 65.
Betts has built that total in two spells. Twenty leadoff homers with the Boston Red Sox, and 33 since arriving with the Dodgers.

Four homers in the eighth alone
This one was decided late. Tied at 2-2, Kyle Tucker drew a walk to open the sixth inning. Jason Foley struck out the next two hitters before Josue De Paula punched a double into the right-center gap. Los Angeles had the lead.
The eighth turned into a home run contest at the expense of left-hander Philip Abner. Max Muncy on the third pitch of the inning, Kyle Tucker two pitches later, then Betts and Will Smith back to back. Four balls over the fence in the same inning, five in the game.
On the mound, Tyler Glasnow fanned 10 in six innings, his best total of the season. He allowed two runs and three hits, and moved to 5-1. Against the Giants, it is becoming a familiar story: 7-1 in 10 career appearances.
The race for the best record is still alive
Los Angeles is 94-60 and has won 12 of its last 15 games. Milwaukee, at 96-58, still sits two games ahead in the race for the best record in the Majors. That matters. A lot. Home-field advantage in the postseason is on the line.
For San Francisco, it was another grim night in a fading season. Jung Hoo Lee hit a homer in the second inning and Jonah Cox drove in a run with a single in the third, but the Giants dropped to 64-90 and have now lost five of their last seven.
