Ranked 35th, and she beat the best
Sara Bejlek walked onto court in Cincinnati overnight as the world No. 35. She walked off having beaten the world No. 1.
The Czech took down Aryna Sabalenka 7-6, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open. It was her first win over a top-ranked player anywhere on the WTA Tour, and it arrived at the tournament where she had never previously won a main-draw match.
Sabalenka had looked untouchable a couple of days earlier, needing 54 minutes to sweep past Wang Xinyu 6-1, 6-3 in the third round. Bejlek gave her a very different night. The opening set went the full distance and was settled in a tie-break. The second never let the top seed find her rhythm, and the break that decided it held to the finish.

A first at this level
This is Bejlek’s first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. Nothing about her week suggested it was coming. She opened her Cincinnati main-draw debut against Barbora Krejcikova, a compatriot and a former Grand Slam champion, in a meeting that closed a four-year loop for a player who has spent most of her career grinding through the lower tiers of the sport.
Madison Keys is next. The American won this title in 2019 and reads these courts better than almost anyone left in the draw. Bejlek starts as the outsider once more. That arrangement has suited her fine so far.
For Sabalenka, the timing stings. She leaves Ohio before the quarterfinals with the US Open now days away, and without the hard-court run she came here to build.
The draw has blown open
Sabalenka’s exit reshapes everything above her. Iga Swiatek came through against Diane Parry to reach a 30th WTA 1000 quarterfinal and meets Elena Rybakina again. Coco Gauff beat Marie Bouzkova and faces Marta Kostyuk, who had knocked out Mirra Andreeva earlier the same evening. Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula complete an all-American quarterfinal.
Eight players remain and the top seed is not among them. In a draw expanded to 96 players this year, the last one standing will have earned it.
