Bundesliga: Bayern lose Saibari for months, Gnabry also hurt

Ankle surgery for Saibari

Bayern Munich confirmed on Sunday that Ismael Saibari has had successful surgery on his right ankle after tearing the syndesmosis ligament in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund. The club gave no timetable, but Bild reports he will be out for at least three months.

Saibari went down in the 29th minute. Two minutes later Serge Gnabry came off with a muscle injury at the back of his left thigh. Bayern say both players are unavailable “for the moment”, which rules them out of Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atlético Madrid.

A thin squad before Madrid

The list does not stop there. Michael Olise left the pitch in the 84th minute holding his right knee and walked out of the stadium limping. Bayern’s statement did not mention him, so his availability for Madrid is an open question.

Jamal Musiala and Luis Diaz are already on the sidelines. Musiala is recovering from a right thigh tear picked up on Germany duty in late September, Diaz from a left thigh tear suffered six days ago against Arsenal in the Champions League.

Take Saibari and Gnabry out as well and Bayern’s attacking options for Tuesday shrink fast. Whether Olise can start is the next question the club has to answer.
