Eberl had been tracking him since Leipzig
Max Eberl could have said nothing. Instead the Bayern Munich sporting director confirmed on Wednesday that the club looked hard at Bradley Barcola before the winger left PSG for Liverpool.
This was not a late enquiry made in August. “To be honest, I have known Bradley since my time at Leipzig. I wanted to bring him to RBL. We spoke about it back then, which helped me build a closer relationship with him. So the interest was always there,” Eberl said.
He ran RB Leipzig before Bavaria. So the file on Barcola dates to a time when the Frenchman was not yet starting every week in Paris.

140 million euros, and Bayern walked
“Of course, we also thought about bringing him to Bayern. But at those figures, it was simply too expensive for us,” the sporting director said.
Liverpool paid 140 million euros with add-ons for the 23-year-old France international, on a five-year deal. Bayern never got close to matching it and Eberl is not pretending they tried.
The money went to Luis Diaz instead. “As for Luis Diaz, we made another expensive decision, but on a very different scale. On top of that, Diaz is a player who brings people into the stadium. We are extremely happy with him,” Eberl added.
Two bets, one Champions League
Barcola is now central to what Andoni Iraola is building at Liverpool. Bayern took a winger already tested at this level, and one the marketing department can sell.
What Munich cannot arrange is the draw. Both clubs are in the same competition this season, and these quotes will be read back out loud the week they meet.
