Opta has run the numbers on all 30 players shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The winner is announced on Monday 26 October. The case for each of them is already written in the data.
Start with Harry Kane. Sixty-one goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich last season, a return nobody in Europe’s top five leagues came close to matching. The next best finished 19 behind him. Thirty-six of those goals arrived in the Bundesliga and earned him a second European Golden Boot. Only Lionel Messi, with six, and Cristiano Ronaldo, with four, have collected that prize more often. Win in October and Kane becomes the first English holder of the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kylian Mbappe has his own set. Top scorer in La Liga with 25. Top scorer in the Champions League with 15. Ten more at the World Cup, where at 27 he became the tournament’s all-time leading marksman.

Rodri came back from an ACL tear and rewrote a 60-year-old record
The Spain midfielder completed 756 passes at the World Cup. Nobody had managed that since 1966. He also played 122 line-breaking passes, a figure last seen when Xabi Alonso was doing it in 2010. Spain won the thing, Rodri captained them, and the Golden Ball went his way.
Michael Olise laid on seven goals for France in North America, the most any player has provided at a single World Cup since 1966. His club season was just as loud: 22 goals and 26 assists in 52 games for Bayern. No other player in the top five leagues reached 20 in both columns.
Jude Bellingham scored seven times as England finished third. No Englishman has ever scored more at one World Cup.
The long shots are not really long shots
Fabián Ruiz has a line on his CV that almost nobody else can claim. Champions League and World Cup in the same season, starting both finals. Ten players in the history of the game have done it.
Bruno Fernandes broke the Premier League single-season assist record with 21 for Manchester United. He created 136 chances, the highest total in England since Mesut Ozil in 2015-16.
Lamine Yamal turned 19 in July and was involved in 41 Barcelona goals. The next best under-20 in Europe’s big five managed 22.
Ousmane Dembele is the one with something to lose. He holds the trophy, and nobody has held on to it since Messi in 2021.
