Two hundred games, one armband, and a summer that turned sour
Leonardo Balerdi is a Roma player. The Giallorossi confirmed the deal on Sunday, a paid loan with a purchase option that turns compulsory once certain targets are hit. He takes the No 26 shirt.
He was 21 when he first landed at Marseille in 2020, on loan from Borussia Dortmund, before the move was made permanent for 11 million euros. Six seasons later the tally reads more than 200 senior appearances between Germany and France, plus 11 caps for Argentina.
Not many players tracked Marseille’s cycles as closely as he did. Coaches came and went. Sporting projects were announced and quietly buried. Balerdi outlasted most of them and ended up wearing the armband.

His relationship with the stands never settled. Jeered early on, he won them over with his passing from the back and a willingness to step into contact. Last season undid all of it, and the Champions League exit was the low point.
By spring the whistles were back. They followed him through the summer friendlies too. A captain booed during a warm-up rarely repairs that once the league starts.
There is a balance-sheet angle as well. Marseille have barely sold anyone for real money this window, and Bruno Genesio called the financial position “very perilous” on Saturday, pointing out the club had made zero signings by 29 August.

Roma have Serie A ambitions and Champions League football, and the league phase draw sends Balerdi back to Paris this season. That return will be worth watching.
