Riley breaks the game open off Duran
Austin Riley picked the biggest at-bat of the Braves’ night. With two outs and two on in the eighth inning, he hit a go-ahead three-run homer off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran. The ball left the bat at 104.6 mph and landed 385 feet away. Atlanta’s win probability jumped from 28.5% to 92.9% on that one swing, and the Braves closed out a 5-3 victory in Game 1 of the National League wild-card series.
Riley had struggled badly for much of the regular season. In the playoffs, he answered.

Phillies give the inning away
The eighth was not clean on Philadelphia’s side. A slow grounder off Trea Turner’s glove was ruled an error and kept the inning alive, and Duran could not get out of it. Turner also went 0-for-3 at the plate and was picked off by Chris Sale, a small moment in a night where the Phillies never got their ground back.
Atlanta leads the series 1-0
The Braves now hold a 1-0 lead in the series. The Phillies, beaten in the opener after Riley’s swing flipped the game, need an answer in Game 2.
