ATP/WTA Madrid : Sinner-Jodar the headline act, Arthur Fils set for night session

The Madrid Masters 1000 serves up a packed Wednesday at the Manolo Santana Stadium, with four big matchups on the slate. The session begins at 13:00 with Karolina Pliskova against Anastasia Potapova, before the highly anticipated quarter-final between Jannik Sinner and Rafael Jodar, scheduled for no earlier than 16:00. Then comes Marta Kostyuk versus Linda Noskova, before Arthur Fils rounds off the evening against Jiri Lehecka.

Pliskova-Potapova to kick things off

The first match pits Karolina Pliskova against Anastasia Potapova. It is a decent way to start, not least because Potapova arrives in good form and has earned her place on Wednesday’s showpiece card after a strong run in Madrid. The winner will set the tone for a day that should only get sharper from there.

Sinner v Jodar, the one everyone wants to see

The main event is, of course, Jannik Sinner against Rafael Jodar. The Italian booked his quarter-final spot by beating Cameron Norrie 6-2, 7-5, and he keeps moving through the draw with the sort of control that makes the rest of the field look a touch resigned. Across the net is 19-year-old Spanish wild card Jodar, who has been one of the stories of the tournament after knocking out Joao Fonseca and Vit Kopriva on his way to this last-eight clash.

This has all the ingredients of a proper tournament moment. On one side, the world No. 1 and the current boss of the tour. On the other, the home favourite, riding the crowd and a rapid rise that is starting to make people sit up. The match is set for second on court, no earlier than 16:00.

Kostyuk-Noskova, a tricky one

After Sinner-Jodar, the centre court moves on to Marta Kostyuk against Linda Noskova. It may be the least talked-about of the four, but that does not make it any less awkward. Noskova comes in full of confidence, while Kostyuk is one of the hardest players to deal with once the scrap starts.

Arthur Fils closes the show, with plenty riding on it

The evening session ends with Arthur Fils taking on Jiri Lehecka. The Frenchman reached the Madrid quarter-finals by beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4, and he keeps showing he has gone up a level on clay. This quarter-final also gives him another shot at Lehecka in a rivalry that is starting to carry some weight.

It is a meaningful appointment for Fils. As the ATP has pointed out, he is among the players to watch on Wednesday, and he meets an opponent he knows well. Another win would push the Frenchman deeper into what is already one of the most impressive tournaments of his season.

A pivotal day in the tournament

Wednesday’s schedule says plenty about where Madrid is right now: the favourites are in, the surprise packages are still hanging around, and the matches are starting to feel like the business end. Between the Sinner-Jodar generation clash and Arthur Fils under the lights, the Manolo Santana Stadium is where most of the attention will be focused on Wednesday.
