ATP Barcelona: Third seed makes an early exit as Cameron Norrie moves through

The third seed is out

The ATP 500 draw in Barcelona has already lost one of its headline names. Serbian player Hamad Medjedovic, ranked 88th in the world, booked his place in the next round at the expense of Alex De Minaur. The match was wrapped up in straight sets. Official time: one hour and 36 minutes.

The numbers tell a rough story for the world No. 7. De Minaur’s serve was a problem all night. The official stats show five double faults and a first-serve success rate of just 36 percent. That kind of mess led to him being broken three times across the match.

More inconsistency on the North American swing

This defeat fits a pattern for the Sydney man. He had just reached the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo, but his North American run had already exposed familiar weaknesses. The Australian went out early in Miami, losing in the first round to Stefanos Tsitsipas, fell in the second round at Indian Wells to Cameron Norrie, and then was dumped out in the first round in Acapulco by Patrick Kypson.

Norrie through, and more to come

The later match of the day took a bit longer. Briton Cameron Norrie got past American Ethan Quinn to seal his place in the next round, doing it in more than two hours and 30 minutes. Norrie will face Rafael Jodar, who came through qualifying, in his next match.

Thursday’s schedule also features the French players. Arthur Fils is set to meet Brandon Nakashima, while Corentin Moutet will take on Lorenzo Musetti. Tournament organisers have also confirmed a medical withdrawal from the main draw for Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
