Four seasons, and a fee north of 15 million euros
Atlanta United confirmed it on Sunday. Breel Embolo is theirs, on a contract that runs through 2030, for a fee reported to be above 15 million euros.
The 29-year-old Switzerland international lands in Georgia as a Designated Player, the mechanism that lets MLS clubs park a salary outside the league’s cap. Rennes cash in after a single season.

Atlanta lean hard into the story
The club did not announce this quietly. “His story began in Cameroon. His talent was forged in Switzerland. He proved himself in France and Germany. Today, he arrives in Atlanta,” read the statement.
The 5-Stripes are selling the journey, and there is one to sell. Tipped early as one of the best things to come out of Swiss football, Embolo spent years at Borussia Monchengladbach before Ligue 1. He is the sort of proven European finisher MLS clubs have been hunting for a decade.
A year in Brittany that never got going
Rennes signed him in the summer of 2025. Twelve months on, he is gone, and the mark he left is hard to find. The club had already lined up a replacement before this was signed off.
That makes two departures in about two hours for Rennes, after the loan agreement with FC Porto for Seko Fofana. Both landed on the day PSG visited in Ligue 1.
Embolo changes continents on the back of the 2026 World Cup, where Switzerland fell to Argentina in the quarter-finals. His Atlanta deal takes him to 33.
