One year in Madrid, and out
Matteo Ruggeri lasted about twelve months at Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old Italian left-back completed a permanent switch to Aston Villa on Wednesday morning, with Atletico banking somewhere near 20 million euros.
Villa’s announcement runs to two lines. Deal done, Europa League winner with Atalanta in 2024, welcome. No contract length. No explanation of what went sideways in Spain.

The trophy that still does the selling
That 2024 final carries weight. Atalanta took Bayer Leverkusen apart and ended a season-long unbeaten run in the process, and Ruggeri was in the middle of it. At 22 he already owned the left flank in a system that asks its full-backs to cover absurd ground and somehow makes them look like they enjoy it.
Atletico bought that player. Villa have bought him a year later, with a few more question marks stapled to the file.
Fifty-five million before lunch
Villa were not finished. Inside the same hour the club confirmed Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, taken from Parma for 30 million euros plus 5 in bonuses, with Paris Saint-Germain having circled the deal for weeks before losing out. Two signings, 55 million euros, one Wednesday morning in August.
Left-back had been flagged in Birmingham for a while. Ruggeri fits it exactly, an attacking full-back built for repeated sprints down the same touchline. Which leaves the question nobody at either club seems keen to answer.
