A new deal signed in the treatment room
Amadou Onana has not played since July 6. On that day, in the World Cup round of 16 against the United States, the Belgian midfielder tore the ACL in his right knee. Belgium went through, then fell to Spain in the quarter-finals, while he started a long spell on the sidelines at 25.
Two months later, Aston Villa have chosen the opposite path to the one the numbers might suggest. According to Foot Mercato, the club have reached an agreement to extend their midfielder’s deal by two more years, taking it through to June 2031. The announcement is said to be imminent.

Sixty million reasons not to let the contract run down
This is not a goodwill gesture. Onana arrived in Birmingham in the summer of 2024 from Everton for around 60 million euros, one of the biggest outlays in the club’s history. After his spell at Lille, where he first played in the Champions League, he became the anchor in Unai Emery’s midfield, covering huge ground and breaking up opposition lines in the same move.
Extending a player while he is still in rehab is also about protecting his value. A deal running out in 2029 loses value every month. One that runs to 2031 gives the club room to negotiate from a position of strength if he gets back to his best. The sporting logic and the financial logic point the same way.
Eight to twelve months, and then the hard part
An ACL injury keeps a player out for eight to 12 months in most cases, and getting back on the pitch never means an instant return to previous levels. The numbers in elite sport are blunt about that: the first season after surgery is nearly always below par.
Villa have spent heavily this summer, with ten arrivals according to Foot Mercato, Leon Goretzka among them. The midfield will not be left short while the Belgian is out. None of those options does quite what Onana does, though, and that may be the simplest explanation for the extension.
