The answer came before the question did
Manchester United can put the notebook away. Aston Villa are not selling Ian Maatsen, and Fabrizio Romano reported this afternoon that the decision was taken internally before any bid landed.
The Netherlands full-back is untouchable, whatever the level of interest. No talks. No door left ajar with hours to go until the deadline.
Try it for $0.99.
They have already sold enough this summer
Villa cashed in on July 21, sending Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for 117 million pounds, a British record at the time.
Most of it went straight back out. Ibrahim Mbaye signed from PSG on Monday for 55 million euros on a five-year contract, and another 30 million euros was pushed across the table for a Championship defender.
Selling a second key man on top of that was never on. Maatsen came in from Chelsea in the summer of 2024, arriving with a half-season at Dortmund behind him that ended in a Champions League final and made his name. The left flank has been his ever since. There is nobody obvious behind him.
United are out of time
They wanted a left wing-back. They will need another name, fast, in a position where the market has been picked clean since July. The English window shuts Tuesday at 11pm.
Villa host Arsenal on Monday night. Maatsen will be in the dressing room, which was settled long before any of this became news.
