Basketball on court, Anthony Edwards knee surgery news

NBA: Edwards set for knee surgery, out up to two months

Surgery set for Thursday

Anthony Edwards is heading to the operating room. The Timberwolves guard will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee, and ESPN’s Shams Charania reports he will miss up to two months. The surgery is scheduled for Thursday, and a firmer recovery timeline only arrives afterward. Minnesota beat reporter Jon Krawczynski says the working belief is that it will run past two months.

According to the New York Times, Edwards tweaked the knee in the season opener against Miami, a game in which he scored 45. An MRI earlier this week convinced both the player and the team that surgery was the right way to deal with the discomfort. The initial expectation is that he is out through the holidays, which would include Minnesota’s first-ever Christmas Day home game, against Oklahoma City.

A bet that did not hold

Edwards and the Wolves chose to skip surgery over the summer, figuring rest would be enough. He said during the preseason that the plan had worked and he felt normal again. Fresh imaging changed the picture. Going under the knife now, the Times reports, should get him back in time to chase the championship he has made his target for this season.

The knee was already a quiet storyline. Minnesota listed him as right knee injury maintenance for Monday’s trip to Cleveland, and coach Chris Finch called it a daily situation without long-term concern. Edwards played anyway and scored 47 in a 127-125 overtime loss.

What Minnesota loses

Edwards was averaging 33.2 points through four games, the best four-game start by a Timberwolf, according to HoopsMatic. The Wolves won their first three games by more than 20 points each before Cleveland ended the run. Now they face the next two months without their centerpiece. The market has already reacted: his NBA MVP odds on Polymarket fell from 11.7% to 3.8% within six hours of the news.
