Tennis: Ann Li sends 16th seed Bencic home in straight sets

Same score, twice, at three in the morning

6-3 and 6-3. Ann Li knocked Belinda Bencic out of the US Open in the second round, closing it out around 03:15 local time. No tie-break, no real wobble, no way back for the Swiss.

Bencic came into New York seeded 16th. She leaves after two matches. Li goes to the third round with a home crowd behind her, which at that hour meant whoever had stayed.

The surface was supposed to help Bencic

When she is playing well, the Swiss is one of the more complete players on tour. Olympic singles gold in Tokyo, a game built on taking the ball early, movement that holds up on hard courts. Flushing Meadows should be her kind of week.

It was not. She lost both sets by the same score and never once looked like turning the match around.

The American seats stayed loud

Li was not the only home win of the late session. Taylor Townsend caused a shock against Jelena Ostapenko. Emma Navarro got past Caty McNally without much trouble.

Tuesday alone took out several seeds from the bottom half of the women’s draw. The third round starts Thursday in New York, and the path through that section now looks nothing like it did on Sunday.
