Seven straight losses, then 10 runs
It had to end somewhere. The Los Angeles Angels were coming off seven straight defeats. They picked a brutal way to snap the skid: a 10-1 rout of the New York Yankees in Anaheim on Friday night.
Walbert Urena went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. The rookie matched his career high for strikeouts and logged the longest outing of his young career. Ninety-five pitches, 68 for strikes.
Vaughn Grissom did the rest. He went 3 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Elmer Rodriguez didn’t last four innings
On the other side, rookie Elmer Rodriguez is still searching for his first win. He is now 0-6 in his career. He was tagged for four runs in 3 2/3 innings, walking three and hitting two batters.
That was where it started to unravel. In the third, Tyler Heineman doubled down the left-field line and scored on a Grissom single. In the fourth, Oswald Peraza and Heineman were both hit by pitches with two outs, Zach Neto brought in the first run, and Mike Trout followed with a two-run single. 4-0.
Spencer Jones answered in the fifth with his eighth homer of the season, a 397-foot shot to centre field. It didn’t matter.
The Yankees helped finish themselves off
The Angels then cashed in on the defence in front of them. In the bottom of the fifth, Christian Moore doubled and then scored on a wild relay throw from reliever Michael Fulmer that sailed into centre field. In the sixth, shortstop Jose Caballero made two errors, first botching a grounder and then throwing away a ball to first base.
Three more runs came home in the eighth off closer David Bednar, including another Grissom two-run double.
New York had won three of its previous four and had strung together five straight wins at Angel Stadium. That run is over. This was the opener of a three-game set.
