A second blast flips it against Toronto
Pete Alonso launched his 40th home run of the season on Monday night in Baltimore. Two outs, eighth inning, a man on base. The Orioles were behind. They finished on top, 4-3.
It was his second homer of the night. He had gone deep in the first inning too. Gunnar Henderson added his own in the sixth and went 3-for-4 at the plate. Baltimore snapped a three-game losing streak.
Yennier Cano threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. Rico Garcia closed out the ninth in three outs, earning his 10th save.

The wild card race tightens up
The win moved the Orioles within four and a half games of the Chicago White Sox for the third American League wild card spot. Toronto is now three and a half games back of that same Chicago side. Both clubs are chasing the same ticket, and the schedule is running out.
George Springer had two singles and an RBI for the Blue Jays. Not enough. Toronto has now lost five of its last seven. Tyler Rogers served up the decisive homer and takes his third loss of the season.
This series opens a three-game set between the two teams in Baltimore. The next few nights could matter plenty in the final standings.
Detroit and San Francisco also landed heavy blows
Elsewhere on Monday, Detroit crushed Washington 9-2. Ben Malgeri drilled a three-run homer, while Javier Baez and Spencer Torkelson added two-run shots of their own. River Ryan, recalled from Triple-A, threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his Tigers debut. He arrived in August in the trade that sent Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers and had not pitched in the majors since 2024.
San Francisco beat Minnesota 5-2. Drew Gilbert had a homer, three hits and three RBI, matching his career best. Tristan Beck followed with 2 2/3 hitless innings.
