Premier League: Ferguson turns up at Old Trafford in a medical boot

The detail everyone noticed

He was wearing a medical shoe.

That is what went round social media on Sunday, faster than most of the goals. Sir Alex Ferguson was in the stands at Old Trafford for Ipswich Town’s visit, round two of the Premier League and Manchester United’s first home fixture of the season.

He is 84 and has been dealing with health problems. The boot said as much without anyone having to write it down. He came anyway.

The cameras found him within minutes. So did the crowd.

Thirteen years off the bench, still the biggest name in the ground

Ferguson managed United from 1986 to 2013. Twenty-seven seasons in that dugout. He built sides, dismantled them, built them again, and left behind a way of operating that the stands have never quite stopped measuring people against.

He has not stayed away since. No boardroom title, no punditry gig, no agenda. He just keeps showing up to watch.

Thirteen years after walking away, a retired manager in a medical boot can still take over the story of a league afternoon. Nobody else in this division does that.

He picked a good one

The timing helped. United put five past Ipswich, Bruno Fernandes took a hat-trick, and the mood eight days after that mess at Hull City lifted considerably.

Five goals at home in his old club’s first Old Trafford outing of the season. Worth the journey, boot or no boot.
