Five sessions since the medical staff gave him the green light. That is the sum total of Alec Pierce’s preparation before he opens his season.
It will not stop him taking the field on Sunday. The Indianapolis Colts wide receiver is set to face the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1.
“He should be good,” Shane Steichen said Monday. “We’ll give him reps and work this week, just like he had last week. He feels really good.”
Surgery on the left ankle in March. Back at practice on August 27. Zero preseason snaps. The math is simple enough.

The No. 1 target, after all that
Pierce enters his fifth NFL season as Indianapolis’ top receiving option. He earned it last year with 47 catches for 1,003 yards, both career bests, plus six touchdowns.
Since Indianapolis took him in the second round of the 2022 draft, he has piled up 157 catches, 2,934 yards and 17 touchdowns across 64 games, 55 of them starts.
The deep ball is his calling card. Two seasons running, he led the NFL in yards per catch. 21.3 last year. That is the kind of number that makes a secondary back off a few yards before the snap.
114 million reasons to get him on the field
In March, right around the time the ankle went under the knife, Pierce signed a four-year, 114 million dollar extension with the Colts.
Indianapolis paid up, then waited. Six months on, the receiver is finally back on a regular-season field. Baltimore on Sunday. We will find out quickly how that ankle holds up.
