Tennis court at an indoor tournament, illustrating Alcaraz's Paris Masters run

Tennis: Alcaraz reaches Paris quarters as Berrettini withdraws

A walkover for the Spaniard

Carlos Alcaraz is into the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters without hitting a ball. Matteo Berrettini pulled out of their third-round match with pain in his arm, a problem he says has lingered for several days. The two were due on court Thursday evening.

The Italian said in an Instagram story that he will undergo tests in the coming days to find out what is wrong. It is another injury setback for a player who beat Ugo Humbert in the previous round, and the tournament wished him a speedy recovery in its own announcement.

What the free pass means for Alcaraz

The timing helps a player with a thin record in this city. Alcaraz has never reached the semi-finals at the indoor hard-court event in six appearances, so that round would be new territory. He now gets a rest day he did not expect.

He arrives with a 39-5 record this season and four titles, at the Australian Open, Qatar, Japan and last week in Vienna. A fifth would add to a year that has already secured his place at the ATP Finals in Turin later this month.

Fils or Fritz next

His opponent in the last eight will be Arthur Fils or Taylor Fritz, who meet in the night session. Fils is the home favourite and recently became the first Frenchman to qualify for the ATP Finals since Gael Monfils in 2016. Fritz sits 11th in the race to Turin and has to beat both Fils and Alcaraz to reach the semi-finals and keep his hopes alive.
