A tiebreak, then control
Carlos Alcaraz opened his Paris Masters campaign this evening with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over American Alex Michelsen. The match took 1 hour and 41 minutes on the Central Court.
The second seed had a bye in round one, so this was his first match of the week. The 23-year-old needed a tiebreak to settle the opening set and then took the second 6-3 to move into the last 16. Alcaraz is ranked third in the world and has never gone past the quarterfinals at the Paris event, so a deep run here would be new ground for him.

Berrettini awaits
His next opponent is Matteo Berrettini. The Italian, ranked 43rd, beat Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7-6(3), 7-5 on Court 1 shortly before Alcaraz walked out, ending the home hope’s run in the second round.
The draw has been opening up around Alcaraz. Alexander Zverev, who became world No. 1 this week, lost his first match to Lorenzo Musetti, and Novak Djokovic went out to Rinky Hijikata in three sets. Alcaraz is still standing, and Berrettini is the obstacle between him and a quarterfinal place.
